You wake from restless sleep in a cold sweat. What were you dreaming? A large rolling object was chasing you, a boulder, and you were wearing a fedora... no, that's Raiders, concentrate. It was... you've got it! A giant bagel chasing you through a saffron field! Then you turned into a bartender serving yourself butter and a finger of whiskey. A food dream. But does it all mean?

View More: How to Interpret Your Food Dreams (Slideshow)

According to dream dictionaries, you might be avoiding a deceitful lover and escaping life's demands by indulging in its pleasures — at the peril of losing friends.

"You can interpret a dream forever," noted Ryan Hurd, who runs Dream Studies, a blog that blends dream education and consciousness studies. "But sometimes they are merely expressing the body's desires and feelings through the emotional/visual/long-term-memory-enhanced way of knowing we call dreaming."

Looking through online dream dictionaries, you see what Mr. Hurd means. One notes that seeing asparagus in a dream can be a symbol of prosperity, but that eating it may indicate your actions will result in an unpleasant outcome (yeah, a bad smell). So which is it?

Then there's the intersection of food and sex. Apples, bananas, figs, mangos, nuts, pineapples, pomegranate, and strawberries are all said to represent sex or sexual desires in some form.

According to Dr. Vernoica Tonay, a licensed psychologist and author of three books about dreams, "Dream dictionaries are basically useless as they are written by people who think something like, 'Hmm... dreaming of a hamburger, well, that must mean the dreamer is wanting some meat in life. That is, they just make up the interpretations from thin air."

So how to make sense of food in dreams? According to Dr. Tonay, if dreaming consists of a metaphorical language, and food is the nurturing sustenance, the dreams with food often reflect ways we nurture ourselves, and how well.So how to make sense of food in dreams? According to Dr. Tonay, if dreaming consists of a metaphorical language, and food is the nurturing sustenance, the dreams with food often reflect ways we nurture ourselves, and how well.

"Ideally, when you dream about food, you dream about eating things that are good for you, that actually do provide nutrients and sustenance and energy," Dr. Tonay explained. "But if you dream about pastries, desserts, and so on, that may indicate you are attempting to nurture yourself with unhealthy, but briefly satisfying, 'food' (which may represent actual food, people, situations, or activities)."

"On the other hand, if in dreams you feel deprived of or tempted by a certain food, you may actually need the specific kind of "nurturance" that food represents. For example, you love donuts, and dream while you're eating a salad, that you long for a donut. Beyond the obvious wish-fulfillment motive of the dream ('I would love to eat a donut!'), consider that what you really need is what donuts represent to you."

Dr. Tonay suggests an exercise to reveal that meaning. Write the word "donut" in the center of a piece of paper, imagine the donut, then write the first thing to come to mind. Do this until you've exhausted all associations. They will reveal what a donut means to you.

For instance, you may have had a memory of eating your very first donut (from one of your most favorite donut places in the world) at a birthday party, which suggests you may need to experience feeling celebrated, or whatever you felt then. "Then think of a way you can give yourself wonder or celebration without eating a donut, and do that for yourself," noted Dr. Tonay, "This technique helps reduce cravings for specific foods while awake, too!"

If you're not ready for the work that the recommended exercises above may involve, check out the more eyebrow-raising interpretations of iconic and interesting foods adapted from the online dream dictionary, Dream Moods. From abalone to watermelons, you may be surprised what you'll discover.

What Your Sex Dreams Really Mean

Decode what those steamy scenes you're dreaming about are trying to tell you.

Ever wake up in the morning wondering how things got so risqué during your dreaming hours? "Just because you're not awake doesn't mean your libido is taking a rest," says Susan Block, PhD, a Los Angeles-based sexologist and founder of the Dr. Susan Block Institute for the Erotic Arts and Sciences. "Sex dreams are a way for your subconscious to unpack everything that's affecting your life, and often, dreams about sex aren't literal. Instead, they could symbolize problems, desires, and hopes in all facets of your life."

Paying attention to your sex dreams over time can be a powerful way to get what you want out of your life, says Lauri Loewenberg, dream expert and author of Dream On It: Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life. "Writing your dreams down each morning and looking at your journals for patterns over time can help you see what your subconscious is trying to tell you."

2. Adrenaline

Yep, it’s true: a man rescuing you from a dragon is more likely to fall in love with you than a man who isn’t rescuing you from a dragon. Why? Adrenaline makes us fall in love quicker—or so studies say.

It might also have something to do with the bonding you do in different experiences. Having dinner with someone is a lot less engaging than going zip lining with someone (on one of those obstacle tracks in the woods or similar), where you get to chat with them, help them and together feel the fear and thrill of getting through each obstacle.

It also makes sense that you fall in love faster as you are in a heightened emotional state when you are in a fearful or exciting situation. Compare the exhilaration of skiing down the alps and then cuddling up with hot chocolate afterwards, when your senses are still tingling, to having a drink at your local bar.

Also, experiencing new things will make you feel alive—only too often do we stop experiencing life and go on autopilot with our routines. When you have great experiences with someone, you associate them with the experience. If you want to make a great impression on someone, make sure you create great experiences with them.

How to incorporate sustainable food into your diet:

Purchase from local farmers who are implementing sustainable agriculture practices. If you have access, utilizing local farmers' markets or CSAs and purchasing organic produce directly from the source not only ensures you have great food to cook with, but it also provides financial support to the farmers that are taking the steps to benefit the environment.

Even if you can't access a farmer directly, shopping for seasonal crops in your local grocery store ensures less distance for produce to travel and a lower carbon footprint. Many grocery stores note when the fruits and vegetables they are selling are from local producers, so keep an eye out or ask your grocery store manager.

Something to consider: Local and fresh produce isn't accessible to everyone in the United States. Shopping for seasonal fruits and vegetables can only make a difference if consumers have access, but according to the USDA, 2.3 million people in the US live more than a mile from a grocery store. If you're interested in learning about expanding accessibility, check out The Food Empowerment Project's resource pages and reach out to your state representatives to urge them to take political action and making policy changes. The greater the reach of sustainable food, the greater the impact on our environment.

There are a lot of areas of sleep that science and medicine can understand and explain. But dreams are an entirely different territory, as the question ‘why we dream’ remains largely unanswered.

Vivid and frequent dreaming is often left open to interpretation through things like dream dictionaries and discussing with friends. Did that dream about your ex-boss really mean you have pent-up guilt and anxiety about your last job? Frequently having stress or anxiety-ridden dreams is usually a red flag for real life stress and the role it’s playing on your body. If you’re constantly waking up panicking in a cold sweat over a dream, it’s time to get your thoughts and stress in order.

Stress: we all have it, but it doesn’t have to control us

Stress is an emotional, physical or mental tension that results from something that’s outside of us.

Some of the bigger stressors or stressful life events include moving to a new place, changing roles at school or work, relationship issues or losing a family member. Stress can cause sleep difficulties, including insomnia, by making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. This impacts the quality of rest. Stress can also cause hyperarousal, which can upset the balance between sleep and wakefulness.

Being stressed is associated with poor sleep in general, and may trigger more frequent dreams. So it’s not uncommon to experience a distressing dream prior to a big event like a job interview, taking an exam or an important appointment.

And although there’s limited research about controlling the content of dreams, anxiety dreams can generally be a result of increased stress during our day-to-day lives. Daily stress can also increase the frequency of these dreams.

The good news? You have a great deal of control over your stress. If you learn to better manage stress in your life, you’ll likely decrease anxiety-ridden dreams and improve your sleep.

Here are four simple strategies to help your mind and body relax before turning in for the night:

  • Spend time winding down before bed: This can be thought of as a “buffer zone,” which is a period of time to allow the activating processes in the brain to wind down and allow your sleep system to take over. It’s generally a good rule of thumb to start about an hour before bedtime. During this time, engage in relaxing activities that you enjoy like reading or listening to music.
  • Schedule “worry time”: If you’re finding it difficult to control your worrying prior to bedtime, scheduling a specific time when you’re allowed to worry may help. Find a time that’s convenient for you and write down your concerns. Limit the time to a specific amount and stick to it by planning something to do afterward. For example, you can plan 15 minutes in the evening, before your favorite TV show.
  • Think of your bedroom as a place just for sleep, sex and pleasant activities: Try to limit the time you spend in bed worrying or being anxious. If you find yourself lying awake in bed stressed out, leave the bedroom and spend time in another room until you feel sleepy.
  • Practice relaxation techniques: There are other ways to relax while getting ready for bed, such as breathing exercises, guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation movements. (You can even check out free apps that help guide you through these exercises.) These techniques can be some of the most critical aspects of stress management and you can use them close to bedtime or throughout your day.

When you wake up panicking at 3 a.m.

We’ve all been there – a nightmare or stress dream causes you to wake up. The next thing you know you’re lying there overthinking your finances and everything you have to do the next day.

When this happens, what can you do to get back to sleep?

  • Stop watching the clock: Counting the minutes will only heighten your distress. Turn your alarm clock around and don’t pick up your phone.
  • Try to relax your body: Use a relaxation strategy that helped prior to bed to relax your body and mind.
  • Get out of bed: If you can’t fall back to sleep after a stressful dream, then try getting out of bed to help decrease the frustration. Don’t spend time in bed hopelessly trying to get back to sleep or interpreting your dream. (If your dream caused you anxiety, you may find yourself attempting to interpret it. But this can further increase the worry. This process will result in your brain associating your bed with stress and not sleeping well.) Once you leave your bed, find an activity that is uninteresting or boring. When you start to get drowsy, go back to bed.

Since dreams obviously aren’t measurable, there’s no real answer to what meaning they hold in our day-to-day life. But we do know that we generally have control over daily stress, which can trigger weird or anxiety-clad dreams. Learning to control the crazy and manage your stress is your best defense to help you sleep peacefully.

The 8 bad dreams your kids are most likely having … explained

Your child’s bad dreams can tell you a lot about their states of mind. Here’s an interpretation of each and how you can help them overcome their fears.

Around age 4, many children begin to develop dark and unsettling fears about things adults can’t always understand. And what they fail at explaining to us during the day doesn’t always just go away &mdash it often pops up at night, in the form of nightmares about boogie men, vampires, shadows that chase them or creepy-crawly spiders and bugs that won’t leave them alone.

Of course, even these horrible dreams are a sign that our children are developing and acquiring normal and healthy anxieties about the world around them and things they can’t explain. Let’s face it: The universe can be a frightening and phenomenal place that brings stress upon the most put-together of adults, so why would we not expect our children to work out their emotions through the occasional bad dream?

Instead of cursing our children’s bad dreams and all the sleepless nights and nights spent in Mom and Dad’s bed that go hand-in-hand with them, we should start thinking of dreams as a priceless guide that give us insight into our little ones’ mental well-being. As Dr. Barbara Condron, an author who has been teaching dream recall, interpretation and lucidity through her association with the School of Metaphysics since 1975, explains, when equipped with the right tools and knowledge, parents can help their kids overcome their nightmares and the fears that create them.

Condron interprets what eight common nightmares mean and how we can help our children deal with their dreams and jitters.

1. Nightmares about bugs and spiders in the room or crawling on their skin

“Nightmares of bugs and spiders point to the development of habits that your child is resisting,” Condron says. “This could be anything from brushing teeth every morning to the task of learning multiplication tables at school, or perhaps resisting telling ‘little white lies.'”

Remedy: “Clear your child’s sleeping space by changing the bed linen with your child, as this empowers them to make a change and to take charge by doing something productive.”

2. Dreams about monsters/ghosts that don’t exist

“Monsters can appear in dreams at any age. These imaginary creatures reflect an ego that seems beyond our control. For a child, this can be pretending to be more or better than what is true or reacting to feeling pushed into a role, like the first day of school. Ghosts are usually tied to something that occurred in the past that is returning inappropriately. A context that might bring this dream could involve a divorce. Daytime memories of ‘what was’ can be painful to a child and appear in a nighttime dream as ghosts.”

Remedy: “Watch and wait, while engaging your child completely in the present time rather than the future or past.”

3. Dreams in which they are left all alone and can’t find a parent

“These dreams are archetypal. They are rites-of-passage dreams where the child is stretching during the daytime, being expected to reference the self for answers and direction, while still feeling the need for security.”

Remedy: “Use this as an opportunity to separate day dreaming &mdash we (the parents) are not going anywhere &mdash and night dreaming. This dream is actually about how you grew up in unexpected ways yesterday.”

4. Dreaming that a big animal, like a lion, is trying to eat them

“Most animals in a dream symbolize the dreamer&rsquos habits. The Dreamer&rsquos Dictionary states, ‘The lion who scares you in a dream may be indicating your resistance to your own courage.'”

Remedy: “Suggest your child act out the dream. Dream re-enactment is an honored tradition in many indigenous populations to free the dreamer from fear. It works, try it!”

5. Bad dream about one of their toys coming to life

“These dreams are often media-driven. In other words, the child has seen this scenario in a cartoon or movie, the idea ‘stuck,’ and now it appears as a symbol in the dream.”

Remedy: “Be choosy about the images you expose your child to.”

6. Nightmare that they have no friends at school or everyone starts laughing at them in class

“When Riley relocates to San Francisco in [Disney film] Inside Out, her anxiety about the first day of class reaches into her dream that night. This illustrates what I call the ‘dream consciousness circuit,’ the link between day dreaming and night dreaming that taps into who we really are as spirit, mind and body. Understanding this link is priceless in self-development at any age.”

Remedy: “Talk openly about your child&rsquos day and listen to their dreams without prejudice. NEVER say, ‘It was just a dream.’ Most children know better.”

7. Dreaming that someone or something is chasing them and they can’t get escape

“This is one of the top 10 most common dreams at any age. When your child has this dream, look for someone or something that she or he is avoiding. Maybe someone at school, perhaps a task or accomplishing a goal will give you a place to begin.”

Remedy: “Watch, ask questions and listen.”

8. Dreaming of falling

“Another of the top 10 most common dreams, falling is a dream symbol reflecting a lack of control or ease in expressing the Self. This can be lacking the right words to say, or knowing how to act, in a situation. This is a common experience for children who are just learning how to meet life face-to-face.”

A Feast of Dreams

"The changes in hormone levels bring on a feast of dreams in pregnant women," says Garfield, who is author of Creative Dreaming and co-founder of the Association for the Study of Dreams. "In addition, pregnant women need to sleep more, and the more you sleep, the more you dream."

Women also seem to dream more during pregnancy because they are more likely to remember their dreams.

"Twenty to twenty-five percent of your sleep is a dream state, and women who are pregnant are more likely to remember more of that percentage," says Garfield.

Garfield explains that dream recall is related to recency. For example, if a baby is moving within the womb and causing the mother to wake, or the mother is waking up to go to the bathroom more often as pregnant women do, they are more likely to remember a dream they just had than if they slept through the night, remembering only the last dream they had before waking in the morning.

With increased recall, a pregnant woman is able to remember the vividness, detail, and color of their dreams. But what do these dreams mean?

We get it: Late night TV and Ben & Jerry's go together like, well, late night TV and Ben & Jerry's they're the perfect match. But due to their sugar content and dairy base, ice cream can give you nightmares. If you're craving something creamy, look for a non-dairy, low sugar option instead. Most of these dairy-free frozen desserts fit the bill.
