The cereal aisle is undergoing a revolution. Granolas and grains are replacing cartoons and toys. As more and more breakfast cereal makers begin looking for new ways to keep customers coming back to the cereal aisle, expect more products that promote grains, protein, and fiber. For example, Quaker just launched this new line of quick (read: practically instant) steel-cut oatmeals.
Steel-cut oats are a notoriously time-consuming grain and rarely an option for busy mornings unless you think ahead. (We suggest you make a big batch on the weekends, spoon out a bit every morning, and reheat for an instant hearty breakfast.) Unlike rolled oats, whole steel-cut oats require around 20 minutes to cook thoroughly. Even then, they remain very chewy, toothsome even. Rolled oats are smooth, or creamy at best after just a few minutes on the stovetop.
So how can quick-cooking steel-cut oats exist? Quaker (and other manufacturers) grind the whole steel-cut oats into slightly smaller pieces so they cook rapidly.
My Take: My bowls of oatmeal were soupy after the suggested cook time (2 1/2 to 3 minutes at 50% power and a 2-3 minute rest for thickening). The instructions are based on an 1100-watt microwave oven. Mine is 1100 watts, but microwave strengths vary, so don't be put off if your grains need more time. I cooked the grains an additional 30-45 seconds at full power, and they were perfect. The first time you cook a bowl, I suggest tinkering with the time and strength to find a setting that works for you and your oatmeal preferences.
Taste and Texture: I prefer oatmeal on the sweeter side, and these did not disappoint. That said, they are not full of fake flavorings, "fruit" pieces, or sweeteners (the Blueberries & Cranberries variety has dried pieces of fruit), so the sugar flavor is very minimal compared to many instant oatmeal packets. The texture is not a traditional steel-cut (i.e. chewy) texture. The tiny bits of grains have more texture than an instant option, though, which is great for people who detest the sometimes-gluey instant oats.
Nutrition Note: You're not really gaining any nutritional benefit with these steel-cut oats compared to their traditional instant variety. A package of Quaker's Instant Maple & Brown Sugar Oatmeal has identical numbers for fiber and protein.
Each steel-cut oatmeal packet contains 1 serving of whole grains. (The instant varieties do, too.)
Important: Microwave versions of steel-cut oats must be cooked in larger bowls because they tend to swell more than instant varieties while cooking. Don't forget that, or you'll have a mess.
Verdict: If you're not a fan of instant oatmeals, I don't know if these will change your mind. You're not gaining anything nutritionally by jumping from the instant variety to this one, but the texture is a bit better. All things considered, it's a good product for people who need their breakfast to happen quickly every single morning and love a bowl of steaming oats.

I’ve never attempted to make risotto because you can’t leave that pot for a minute but now I can.The risotto came out delicious. Did I tell you it can also cook a turkey? Yes a 10-11 pound turkey. When meat is juicy and falls off the bone you know you’re doing something right. Butternut Squash was also made and I can’t believe how easy it was.
I’ve always wanted a Pressure Cooker XL but thought it was do difficult to use. If I knew it was this easy and cooked food as quickly as it does I would have been purchased one. I was so excited that tge first meal I made was curry chicken and rice. It was amazing. Once again meat falling off the bones. The whole family devoured that. The next thing on my list was macaroni and cheese. The cheesier, the better. This also turned out great and we were very happy that it was fine in 10 minutes. Just put everything in the Pressure Cooker XL and that’s it!

If you want your meat more crispy once you take it out of pressure cooker put in oven for a few minutes and it will crisp right up. Gene Snitsky (Turkey Dude) said one of his favorite foods to make in the Pressure Cooker XL is buffalo wings. I’m definitely making these too.
This year Thanksgiving and all major cooking holidays, events and get-togethers will be a breeze. I’ll be able to relax with my and cut down on kitchen time. Also busy parents will appreciate this too.

Coconut Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies
I’ve always wanted to make a great cookie with steel cut oats, but the fact that steel cut oats themselves take a good 30 minutes to cook on the stove-top made that an impossible dream. When I learned Quaker was coming out with a new 3-minute variety, I knew immediately what I was going to do with them. Make oatmeal. Just kidding, cookies. Because why start with breakfast when you can start with cookies?
Steel Cut oats are whole oat groats that have been chopped into pieces. They have an entirely different texture than regular old fashioned oats, and I knew they would be really great in a cookie.
You can make this recipe with all steel cut oats, but I found I especially liked it with a combination of steel cut and old fashioned. It’s just more great texture and the old fashioned oats help give the cookies a little shape. But I’ve made them several times both ways, and they’re super delicious with all steel cut as well. My family was split on which version they like better.
This recipe is a little different in that it uses oil instead of butter. I prefer coconut oil here because it lends well to the mellow coconut flavor in the cookies, but you can substitute vegetable oil here as well. See how many options I’m giving you here? I’m all about options. Anything that helps you all get cookies on your table.
You’ll want to melt your coconut oil, since it’s a solid at room temperature, and then mix it up with some dark brown sugar, regular sugar, egg, vanilla, and a little coconut extract if you have some (it’s optional).
After mixing in the dry ingredients, you’ll add this trio of loveliness: the oat combo, shredded coconut, and chocolate chips.
The combination of textures and flavors here are amazing.
Scoop it into balls and place on a cookie sheet. (My go-to cookie making supplies are a cookie scoop and a silicone baking sheet.)
And bake them until they’re just underdone. They tend to finish cooking really nicely as the cool on the pan and you want them to stay soft and chewy.
These are awesome warm, with a glass of cold milk. If you use coconut extract in them, you’ll find that shines through when they’ve cooled.
Either way, these are super good cookies with soft, chewy centers and slightly crisp edges. Perfect for some weekend baking!
Coconut Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies
Recipe by Our Best Bites
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (if using table salt, use closer to 1/4 teaspoon)
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon coconut extract (optional)
1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
1/2 cup Quaker 3-Minute Steel Cut Oats
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 cup shredded sweetened coconut flakes
3/4 cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside. In a mixing bowl, combine brown and white sugars, egg, vanilla, extracts, and coconut oil. Mix until well blended and add in flour mixture. When well combined, add in oats, coconut, and chocolate chips and mix until combined. Use a cookie scoop to portion dough into balls and place baking sheets. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until edges are set and centers still appear soft. Remove from oven and let sit for 2-3 minutes before transferring cookies to a cooling rack. Yields: 2 dozen.
